Originally established to focus on furnishings, metalwork, ceramics, and glass, the department today encompasses more than 18,000 works in all mediums from America and Europe, from the Middle Ages to the current. It is worth noting that even the world-renown Metropolitan Museum of Art (residence to crucial Previous Masters like Rembrandt) has rooms filled with furnishings, tapestries and historical Grecian urns and bowls. Also on view are 18th-century decorative arts objects of Central Europe, as well as examples of English furnishings and decorative arts and period rooms dating to the seventeenth and 18th centuries.
